The National Institute of Design (NID) is one of India’s premier design institutes, recognized internationally for its excellence in design education, research, and practice. Established in 1961 under the Ministry of Commerce and Industry, Government of India, NID has played a pioneering role in shaping design as a discipline in the country. It is an autonomous institute and was declared an “Institution of National Importance” by an Act of Parliament in 2014, highlighting its significance in nurturing creative talent for the nation and beyond.
NID’s main campus is located in Ahmedabad, Gujarat, with extension campuses in Gandhinagar and Bengaluru, and newer campuses in Andhra Pradesh, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, and Assam, expanding its reach across India. The campuses are equipped with advanced studios, workshops, and laboratories, fostering a creative learning environment that blends traditional crafts with modern design practices.
The institute offers a wide range of undergraduate and postgraduate programs. The flagship program is the Bachelor of Design (B.Des), a four-year course with specializations in areas such as Industrial Design, Communication Design, Textile and Apparel Design, Animation Film Design, Furniture Design, Ceramic and Glass Design, Graphic Design, and more. At the postgraduate level, NID offers the Master of Design (M.Des) in diverse fields including Transportation & Automobile Design, Lifestyle Accessory Design, Interaction Design, Toy & Game Design, New Media Design, and Strategic Design Management. Additionally, NID also offers a Ph.D. in Design to encourage research and innovation.

NID Entrance Exam Structure

Admission to NID is through the Design Aptitude Test (DAT), conducted in two stages.

DAT Prelims (Stage 1): A written test that evaluates creativity, analytical ability, visualization skills, knowledge of design, and general awareness.

DAT Mains (Stage 2): Shortlisted candidates are invited for studio tests, material handling, drawing assignments, and personal interviews, depending on the program applied for.
